The Downs Ladies Football

Junior Championship Final

Junior Championship Final Cusack Park:            The Downs 4:12        Moate 2:6

From the throw in Moate playing with a strong wind  settled first and quickly went ahead, having  the greater share of scoring chances leading at the end of the first quarter 0:4 to 0:2. The Downs sensing the game was getting away from them moved up a gear and playing with greater accuracy went in at half time 1:5 to 0:4. Aided with the wind in the second half The Downs used their greater share of possession to build up an impressive lead which we held until the final whistle. Team:

Lynda Heffernan, Amy Kenny, Amy Dagg, Emma Murtagh, Aoife Rowan, Roisin Scally, Emma Murtagh, Niamh Nolan, Claire Crowley, Niamh Rowan, Laura Wynne, Gillian Ferguson, Britney McNamee, Bernie Corroon, Leanne Duncan, Aishling Egerton, Rebecca Kelly, Amy Staunton, Ellen Tate, Mary Lynam, Beth McGuire,

Laura Kelly, Sarah McGuire, Georgina Crowley, Caoimhe Carthy, Katie Heffernan, Karen Lynam Amber Gilgan, Grace Raleigh, Serena Wynne

The Aishling Maguire Cup was presented to team captain by Westmeath Chairperson Geraldine Giles to the cheers of the large support. Well done to all the players and coach Shane Deering  who put in a big effort all year and achieved their goal of going back up to intermediate ranks after the disappointment of relegation last year.  The year is not over yet we have the league final to come against Moate .

The excitement of the day was not confined to the adult team. Our under 10s playing at halftime also experienced the Cusack Park atmosphere on a county final day. Thanks to the county board for giving these young players this opportunity.

Under 16 Semi-Final                         The Downs 5:7          Milltown 2:10

Well done to the entire Squad of U16 girls, you did your Club proud with a huge away win over Milltown 5-7 to 2-10 in this Division 1 Semi Final. The Downs had a full squad turnout even though Milltown could only field 12 players on the day. This reduced number of players is very tough on girls who dont get an opportunity. This
fixture always brings the best out of both sets of players and this match was no different as it turned into another titanic struggle with the Downs girls proving that they continue to have the bottle to overturn 1st half deficits into a full time win. Please note that that this a team made up of more than 15 players. Downs squad Ciara Faulkner, Naoise O Donoghue, Shauna Conneely, Amber Gilligan, Roisin Murray, Ciara Wynne, Lucy Power (2-02), Aoife Mullen, Megan Dowdall (1-0), Meadbh Scally (0-03), Olivia Glynn, Britney McNamee (1-02), Sheila McGrath, Orlaith Murray, Abbie Scott, Isabel Robson, Clodagh Kelly, Hannah Dalton, Eimear Tone, Karen Lynam, Roisin McDonagh, Emma Cleary, Serena Wynne, Grace Raleigh (1-0). Next up is Killucan in the final next weekend, venue time & date to be confirmed.

Congratulations to Katie Heffernan who travelled to Belgium with the Irish women’s under 18 rugby 7s team and got on the score sheet in a number of the games.
